How Nurses Are Making A Difference

The month of May is devoted to celebrating the invaluable contributions of nurses during National Nurses Month. This year’s theme is, “You Make A Difference”, highlighting and honoring the positive impact nurses have on their patients and community.

Nurses play a crucial role in the healthcare system with their knowledge, dedication, and compassion. They are often the first point of contact for patients and work diligently to ensure that their patients receive the best possible care.

Here at Prestige Care, we see first-hand the many ways nurses are making a difference in the lives of their patients.

Individualized Patient Care

Every patient is unique and requires individualized care and nurses take the time to get to know their patients, understand their medical history, and listen to their concerns.

In many settings like skilled nursing centers, nurses create meaningful relationships and bonds with their patients by learning their life stories and what motivates them to help them achieve their care goals.

Advocating For Patients

Nurses are often the first line of defense for their patients, and they are strong advocates for their patients’ rights and needs. Nurses advocate for their patients by monitoring their health status and communicating with patients and their families about their care plans. They also work closely with physicians and other healthcare professionals on behalf of their patients, ensuring that their concerns are addressed, and they receive the appropriate treatment.

Offering Emotional Support For Their Patients and Loved Ones

Healthcare settings can be emotionally challenging, whether it’s hospital stays or transitioning to a nursing home, and nurses are alongside their patients at every step. They provide emotional support to their patients by offering comfort, companionship, and compassion.

Nurses understand that the path to healing is not only about physical care but mental well-being as well. One Prestige Care patient, Darleen Applegate, found joy and motivation from her nurses and care team during her stay at Timberview Care Center. Darleen praised the nursing team members by sharing, “It makes a big difference because if you’ve got their support and their care, it makes it easier to get well.”

Nurses also support loved ones by extending empathy and resources to navigate the associated complexities and stress. As a recognition of the endless support of nurses, a patient’s family member at Hood River Care Center expressed, “Our experience at your facility was so reassuring and calming during our mom’s stay. Every person we had contact with was professional, compassionate and gave us such confidence that she would receive all that one could hope for in care.”

Translating and Educating About Medical Terms

Medical terminology can be confusing and overwhelming for patients and their loved ones. Nurses use their communication skills and knowledge to translate medical jargon to make sure that medical conditions, treatment options, and medication instructions are understood. By taking the time to answer questions and address concerns, nurses help patients and their loved ones make informed decisions about their care.

The Benefit of Making a Difference

Nursing is known to be one of the most personally rewarding careers. They find immense fulfillment and enjoyment by helping others.  According to Phelps Health, nurses appreciate the opportunity to make a positive impact on patients’ lives by providing compassionate care and support. They relish the chance to connect with patients and their families, fostering meaningful relationships that go beyond the medical realm.

Additionally, Carson-Newman University gathered 15 testimonials from registered nurses to better understand the joy of nursing careers. Although there are a variety of reasons why these nurses enjoy their jobs, one common theme is the reward of being able to make a difference in their patients’ lives.
