David Troxel, based in Sacramento, CA, is a nationally and internationally recognized expert in Alzheimer’s disease and long-term care. With a career dedicated to advancing dementia care, he has co-authored seven influential books alongside Virginia Bell, including The Best Friends Approach to Dementia Care (2nd Edition). His latest work, The Best Friends Staff: Learning to Deliver Exceptional Dementia Care, in Fall of 2024.

David’s expertise spans best practices in dementia care, caregiver support, staff training, and long-term care program development. Through his consulting practice, he specializes in dementia education and program development, serving as the dementia care consultant for a number of senior living companies. He is currently Interim Vice President for Cognitive Health for the Institute on Aging.

In addition to his professional work, David has personal experience as a family caregiver, supporting his mother, Dorothy, who passed away from Alzheimer’s in April 2009—a journey that deepened his commitment to improving care and support for families navigating dementia.
