The Importance of Activities at a Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation Center

As your loved one transitions to a skilled nursing center after a serious hospitalization, they may begin having feels of uncertainty and isolation knowing they will be away from home and their family. This can lead to a significant impact on their mental and physical well-being and overall quality of life.

During your loved one’s short-term care stay, it is important to prioritize both their physical and emotional health through peer support and social connection. This can be achieved through a variety of activities offered at many post-acute care centers that are intended to engage residents through a meaningful and stimulating approach. This may include group exercise sessions, community outings, or center events.

At Prestige Care, our Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Centers offer a diverse range of activities that are tailored to the unique needs and interests of each resident to enhance their well-being. We know that participating in activities can offer a variety of benefits that can ensure an optimal recovery and successful transition back home.

Improves Physical Health

While many residents at a skilled nursing center may find limitations in their mobility, many activities are intended to encourage movement to help reduce fall risk and improve strength and balance. These activities are designed to cater to the unique needs of each individual and may include light exercise sessions, chair yoga, walking, or gardening.

Moving your body during these types of activities can help promote blood circulation, increase independence, and regain range of motion. This level of physical activity can also prevent future complications that are associated with inactivity and reduce fall risk by up to 40%.

At Prestige, our Activity Directors work with each resident and their care team to determine their physical ability to engage in these types of activities. Our care teams work with each resident and their families to incorporate activities and exercises that are intended to improve physical functionality and well-being.

Establishes Social Connection

Engaging in activities during your stay at a skilled nursing center is not only beneficial for your physical health, but it can also help reestablish your social connections and sense of belonging. Activities can help reduce a person’s feelings of isolation by providing opportunities for residents to socialize and form a community. This may include movie days, ice cream socials, holiday celebrations, or a community outing in town.

At Prestige, our Activity Directors encourage residents to participate in daily group sessions and social interactions through a variety of activities. We also encourage their families to participate in activities with them to show their support and provide motivation. Forming meaningful connections with other residents who have shared similar experiences can help provide emotional support and make a positive impact on their overall recovery.

“Meeting other residents makes them feel more welcome and comfortable during their post-acute care stay,” says Renee Wood, Activity Director at Oregon City Health Care Center. “Our residents enjoy participating in activities as well as meeting others.”

Initiates Cognitive Stimulation

While it is important to engage in physical activities during your short-term care stay, you should also consider activities that stimulate the mind. Activities such as puzzles, reading, or card games can help improve a person’s cognitive function and help prevent further cognitive decline. This is especially vital for those who live with a cognitive health condition such as Alzheimer’s or dementia. These structured activities focus on problem solving, memory recall, and promote creativity which can all help stimulate healthy brain function.

In addition, these types of activities promote social and intellectual engagement that can contribute to a sense of emotional fulfillment, encourage independence, and foster a more positive outlook on their rehabilitation journey. Staying mentally active during your recovery at a post-acute care center can lead to a smoother and quicker recovery and enhance your quality of life.

Enhances Emotional Well-Being

Regardless of a person’s health or age, participating in activities is critical to maintaining their emotional well-being and positive quality of life. This is especially important during a stay at a post-acute care center as a negative outlook can slow your recovery progress. Engaging in joyful activities can help improve a person’s mood, increase relaxation, and provide a sense of purpose and creativity.

Meaningful activities such as crafting, art, or music therapy can be beneficial for a person’s emotional well-being as they provide comfort and an outlet for personal expression. Engaging in these types of activities can also offer an opportunity for socialization and foster a supportive environment as they connect with other residents.

Our goal at Prestige is to ensure our residents are living as normal of a life as possible during their recovery and that includes offering a variety of activities intended to create a supportive, comfortable environment and enhance their overall quality of life.

Activities at Prestige Care

At Prestige Care, we know that transitioning from a hospital stay to a short-term care facility can be a challenging and uncertain time for residents and their families. During a person’s recovery journey, it is important they consider not only improving their physical health, but also engaging in activities that can improve their emotional health.

Our Activity Directors work closely with other team members, the residents, and their families to assist with providing a variety of activities of interest. Whether they are in a group setting, or prefer spending time in their room, we provide activities that each resident has the ability to participate in.

“We greet the residents in the morning and make them aware of daily activities, organize and run the daily activities, and provide one on one visits with the residents that prefer to stay in their room,” mentions Wood. “To cater to the unique needs and interests of each resident, we check in with them and their family members on a regular basis to establish the activities they are interested in pursuing or to see if there have been any changes in activity interest.”

It is important to understand that activity programs offered at a Prestige Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation Center are designed to cater to a diverse range of interests, physical and mental abilities, and the medical needs of each resident. Whether they are engaging in physical exercises intended to regain functional mobility, or activities designed to stimulate and enhance cognitive function, these types of programs are critical components of an individual’s overall rehabilitation plan. These activities can make a positive impact on an individual’s ability to regain their independence, reestablish their confidence, and improve their overall quality of life upon their return home.
