Interview the Interviewer

So, you got the phone call for the interview. You do all the steps to prepare. You show up early, and the questions begin. Finally, they say those seven words, “Do you have any questions for us?” Stumped, you say no and go on your way. But, what if we told you that this interview is about them too? As a general rule, you must have at least one question ready, with three to five questions being optimal. This is your chance to learn more about the position, work culture, community or care center dynamics and more. The role might be attractive on paper, but you could be totally thrown off once you learn more about the company. Remember, you are interviewing a company just as much as a company is interviewing you! At the end of the day, a company is trying to sell you this position as much as you are trying to sell yourself to them.

Here are some great questions what will truly impress the interviewer during your next job interview and why asking this question is a terrific idea:

  1. How would you describe the work culture in the office?

This is a great question to ask because it will give you a general sense of what the dynamics are in the office, community or care center. If your work style doesn’t seem to match up with what a interviewer is describing, maybe this role and company is not what will help you feel the most satisfied. Remember, you have the choice to accept the job or not.

  1. Are there many opportunities for professional growth at this company?

If you’re looking to make a career in this company (and Prestige has a defined upward career path!), this is a great question to ask if you want to find out how much they value their employee’s contributions. Companies with a strong professional development culture will ultimately have higher retention rates and happier employees.

  1. What does a normal day look like in this position?

This question is the best way to look beyond the job title and dig into what really occurs day to day. This often gives you an insight into their expectations, speed and general workload.

  1. Who will be my direct supervisor?

Start that relationship now! If they are not interviewing you, the interviewers will try to give you some information about their approach to leadership and general expectations. You can ask about how that person communicates, what they are like to work with and more. Your supervisor should be as dependable as you.

  1. If possible, ask for a tour of the care center/workspace

On occasion if you ask for a tour, the interviewers will happily give one. This is the most revealing way to get a sense of the work environment and culture. You will see employees interacting amongst each other or with a resident. You will see the cleanliness of the building and overall vibe of the place.

By leveraging well thought out questions, not only do you seem more engaged than other candidates, but it allows you to understand the role and organization better, which will allow you to make a better employment decision for you.
