Meet Betty “Jo”, an Expressions Memory Care resident who resides in one of our California senior living communities. Originally from Houston, TX, she had a horse named Maude and learned to ride at eight years old. Growing up in the South, she enjoyed line dancing with friends as well as gardening. Jo traveled around the country in a motor home with her sister and once worked on a dude ranch. She enjoyed shooting and rumor has it she’s a pretty good shot!
Jo had a wide variety of interests and accomplishments over the years including racing stock cars, playing the guitar, woodworking, volunteering and barrel racing. She moved into our community in March and immediately connected with Stephanie, one of her caregivers. Every month in the community there is a theme with coordinated activities and events designed to engage residents with dementia. These themes keep our residents engaged so they can live a productive, meaningful life and also have fun. During the theme “Everything Colorful” Stephanie discovered another one of Jo’s amazing talents, painting. Over the course of several weeks, the duo would work on the painting, mostly during the evening hours after dinner until it was completed. Jo and Stephanie bonded during this project because Stephanie is also an artist. They would bounce ideas off of each other while working on the painting and spending time together.
This painting is called "Sutter Buttes" and is now a permanent installment in the Expressions courtyard. The maintenance director added a couple of coats of polyurethane to protect it from the weather. It’s one of the first things you see when you step foot into the community. Jo is featured here with her painting as well as Oreo, the community cat.
